Robert Bobby Dews
Died:02/18/2026     Initiation Date:03/30/1969     Initiation Number:0488     Chapter:Epsilon Nu     School:USM

Obituary:Robert Carrington "Bobby" Dews, Sr. Obituary Robert Carrington “Bobby” Dews Sr. of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, passed away Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at his home, surrounded by his immediate family. He was 75. Bobby faced complications following cancer in 2005, but in true Bobby Dews fashion, he fought with strength and determination for more than twenty years. He was preceded in death by his parents, C.L. Dews Jr. and Jeanne Dews of Hattiesburg, and his brother, C.L. “Joe Buddy” Dews III, also of Hattiesburg. Born August 10, 1950, in Hattiesburg, Bobby was a lifelong resident of the community he loved. He was a 1968 graduate of Hattiesburg High School, where he played basketball for the Tigers. He was active in athletics and remained a devoted sports fan throughout his life. After graduation, Bobby attended The University of Southern Mississippi, following in his father’s footsteps as a Southern Miss athlete and playing basketball for the freshman team. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration. While at Southern Miss, Bobby was active in Kappa Sigma Fraternity, where he formed lifelong friendships and, thanks to his fraternity brother Jimmy Buffett, became a devoted Parrot Head. Jimmy’s music was always playing in their home and became part of the fabric of their family. In 1971, Bobby married the love of his life, Hattiesburg native Patty Overstreet Dews, and they shared 55 happy years together. He was a proud and loyal supporter of Southern Miss and remained closely involved in USM athletics throughout his life. Bobby spent his entire career with C.L. Dews and Sons Foundry & Machinery Company, Inc. serving as Vice President until his retirement in 2020. For more than forty years, he helped guide the company through seasons of growth and change. His success in business was always about people. He knew their names, their stories, and he loved nothing more than a good conversation. He was a man of integrity, hard work, and rooted in principle. More than anything, he earned the respect of those around him by the way he lived and the way he treated others. If you knew Bobby, you knew his love for all things Southern Miss. He rarely missed a chance to cheer on the Golden Eagles, and his pride in the University was both constant and contagious. His final outing was spent celebrating a Southern Miss basketball victory alongside his children—just where he would have wanted to be. That devotion led him to serve the University in many meaningful ways. He was a lifetime member of the Southern Miss Alumni Association and served on the Board of Directors for the USM Foundation. He was a proud member of the M-Club and the Circle of Champions and served on the Executive Board of the USM Athletic Foundation. Bobby was past president of the USM Kappa Sigma Fraternity Housing Corporation, a recipient of the fraternity’s Outstanding Service Award, and a member of the USM School of Engineering Technology’s Advisory Committee. Together, he and Patty were Association for Excellence members of the Honor Club with the USM Foundation. In 2001, Bobby was inducted into the USM Alumni Association Hall of Fame. Bobby also believed deeply in giving back to his community. He served as Chairman of the Mississippi Manufacturers Association, was a board member of the Hattiesburg Convention Center, and co-chaired the Mississippi chapter of the United States Olympic Committee. Bobby was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church of Hattiesburg, where he faithfully served as a deacon. More than any title he ever held, Bobby was a devoted husband, father, and proud grandfather who loved his family above all else. He is survived by his wife, Patty Overstreet Dews; his son, Robert Carrington Dews Jr. (Rachel); his daughter, Lucy Dews Jussely (Daniel); and his brother, Thomas Alvin Dews (Skip) all of Hattiesburg, MS. He was known to his grandchildren by the name he cherished most—“Chief.” Nothing brought him greater joy than time spent with them, whether it was cheering them on, telling stories, or simply being together. They were the light of his life. He leaves behind five grandchildren who meant the world to him and who will miss him dearly: Daniel Dews Jussely, Sterling Elizabeth Dews, Hallie Carrington Jussely, Stella Claire Dews, and Carrington Lane Dews.
