Francis Joseph “Frank” Campbell, a former district attorney and longtime Vicksburg lawyer, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2007, at his home. He was 59.  Campbell died of an apparent heart attack around 3 p.m., said Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey.  For 11 years, Campbell was district attorney for the 9th Circuit District, which covers Warren, Claiborne, Sharkey and Issaquena counties. He served from 1980 until 1991 before resigning in January of that year and entering private practice, where he continued to work until his death.

“Dad was one of those guys that just made everyone happier by being around him,” said William F. Campbell, the oldest of Campbell’s three sons. “He treated everyone with respect. It’s a huge loss. He was a wise man, and he just did a lot of good things for this town.”  During his tenure as district attorney, Campbell handled thousands of cases, including the shotgun murder of a pizza delivery man, the killing of a toddler by her mother and the butcher-knife slaying of two Port Gibson women.  A 1966 graduate of St. Aloysius High School, he attended Mississippi State and transferred to the University of Southern Mississippi where he graduated in 1970. He continued on to the University of Mississippi and graduated with a law degree in 1973. He returned to Vicksburg and married the former Carole Blackledge.

In 1980, Campbell was hired as assistant district attorney under George Chaney, who resigned as DA in October 1980. Campbell was appointed to Chaney’s post and, two months later, was elected to the spot. In 1990, he ran for circuit court judge, but lost and returned to private practice. In 1986, he served a term as president of the Mississippi State Prosecutors Association. He was also president of the Warren County Bar Association.  “I never thought of myself as a career prosecutor,” Campbell told The Vicksburg Post in a 1991 interview. “I don’t want the personal responsibility for 250 felonies a year.”  A young deputy when Campbell was elected in 1980, Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace described him as a man of “great integrity” and a “very effective prosecutor and attorney.”

“He will certainly be missed by the community,” Pace said.  Reached at home late Friday afternoon, outgoing 9th Circuit District Attorney Gil Martin said much the same. “I sure am sorry. He was a good lawyer, and he’ll be missed.”  Martin was elected district attorney in 1992, following the short term of Bob Moran, who was appointed interim DA by then Gov. Bob Mabus to fill the spot by vacated by Campbell’s resignation.  Incoming District Attorney Ricky Smith, who defeated Martin for the spot earlier this month, is a partner in Campbell’s law firm, as is Campbell’s brother, Jerry Campbell.  Campbell was a member of First Baptist Church and enjoyed woodworking, old cars and antiques. “He could do chests of drawers or smaller pieces,” said his son William F. Campbell. “Personally, I’m just going to miss being around him.”  Bobby Bailess, a Vicksburg lawyer and president of the Mississippi Bar Association, agreed.  “He was a great family man,” said Bailess. “I knew him pretty much all my life.”  Campbell was preceded in death by his parents, William H. Campbell and Jane Fisher Campbell; and a brother, John F. Campbell.  In addition to his wife, son and brother, Campbell is survived by two other sons, Lane Campbell and Matthew Campbell, who are both attending Ole Miss; a sister, Mary Stewart of Carlisle, Pa.; and a daughter-in-law, Leigh Campbell, wife of his oldest son.  Glenwood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

David Woodard Carraway, a native of Bassfield, Mississippi died February 17, 2007 at his home in McLean, Virginia after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 48.

The son of Jim and Mary Carraway of Brandon, Miss., David is survived by wife Mary Lynne, children--Molly, 14; Carson, 12; Brandon, 9; Hannah, 5 - his parents and younger brothers Kirk and Ken of Brandon, Mississippi.

David, a very successful businessman, was co-owner and president of the Washington, D.C. area franchise of Domino's Pizza where he had been an executive and an owner after joining the firm in 1985. He was president and majority owner of the enterprise at the time of his passing. Along with his partner, Carraway expanded the franchise, which included Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C. and suburban Maryland, to its current 58 stores.

In 2005, David was named to the Chairman's Circle Hall of Fame for Domino's Pizza, at the national level, for his outstanding achievements in leading the franchise. He served in numerous capacities with Domino's. He was active in community and professional organizations including his Church and United Way.

Prior to joining Domino's David earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Southern Mississippi where he was active in student government. Before completing college, he worked as an aide to former Governor William Winter. He also served in Washington, D.C. on the staff of Congressman Sonny Montgomery.

David attended school at Bassfield and Prentiss Christian High School. He was active in athletics, while also working on the family farm. He graduated from USM with a Business degree. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Before joining Domino's Pizza, he was in the banking business in Jackson, Mississippi.

David was an avid sportsman and adventurer. He loved to ski, hike, climb and completed two triathlons, several marathons and adventure races. He and wife, Mary Lynne, ran two marathons together and he and his brothers participated in numerous adventure races as a team.

In addition to his successful career, David was a devoted husband and father. He was a volunteer-leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

A memorial service will be held February 22, at L.L. Roberts United Methodist Church Bassfield with visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. and the memorial following at 2:00 p.m. He will be buried at Bassfield Cemetery.

CARTWRIGHT, Jr., Charles Cluster "Chuck", 58, of Tampa, died Sunday, November 10, 2002 at his home. He was a 1962 graduate of Bay High School and a 1967 graduate of University of Southern Mississippi where he received a degree in communications and public relations. He was a retired public relations executive with Cox Target Media in Atlanta, Ga. He was a member of the Univ. of Southern Mississippi Alumni Association, the Eagle Club, and Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He is survived by his mother, Marguerite Garrett Cartwright of Oldsmar, Fla.; two sons, David Cartwright of Washington, D.C., and Daniel Cartwright of Clearwater, Fla.; two aunts, Glenna Ward and Lillian Garrett; uncle, Donald Garrett and wife Donna, all of Lynn Haven; and friend, Steve Myers of Ft. Myers, Fla. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m.in the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Lynn Haven Cemetery. Robert Hayes Cleveland Jr. (Bobby), devoted husband, stepfather, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to so many, died Thursday, April 28, 2022, as a result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident. He was 67.
Bobby was a native of Hattiesburg and a long-time resident of the Barnett Reservoir (The Rez) community.
A memorial service will be held Thursday morning at 10:30 at Lakeshore Park on the shores of The Rez. A reception will follow immediately at Kathryn's Steakhouse and Seafood Restaurant on Old Canton Road in nearby Ridgeland.
Bobby was an avid outdoorsman, a highly respected journalist, and, quite frankly, a much-beloved character. For years, his outdoor columns and features in the Jackson Clarion Ledger were much like a hunting and fishing bible to Mississippians. His articles also were published in regional and national outdoors magazines. Bobby also designed Sunday sports sections that won numerous national sports journalism awards.
More recently he worked for the Barnett Reservoir and Pearl River Valley Supply District as a publicist and event coordinator.
Bobby was an expert hunter and fisherman and a huge fan of nearly all sports, especially those involving the New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Braves and Southern Miss. He also was a faithful attendee of any sports event that involved his grandsons, Cooper and Bo Purvis, who lovingly called Bobby "Boboo."
Bobby loved telling stories and he loved good storytellers. He loved a good joke and knew how to tell one – or 50. He loved to cook and his gumbo and grilling expertise will be missed by all lucky enough to have sampled his cooking.
He was preceded in death by his father Robert Hayes Cleveland, Sr. (Ace), a Mississippi Sports Hall of Famer, and his mother, Carrie Alene Cleveland.
Survivors include his beloved wife Pam Cleveland, his brother Rick Cleveland (Liz), stepson Kenner Purvis (Lane), nephew Tyler Hayes Cleveland, niece Anna Kay Cleveland, and grandsons Cooper and Bo.

Memorial services for Gilbert Byron “GB” Collins, 81, of High Point, N.C., formerly of Hattiesburg, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Linden.  Services were under the direction of Culby Funeral Services in High Point. 

Mr. Collins was born July 11, 1932, in Hattiesburg, the son of Gilbert Byron Collins Sr. and Lillian Collins.  Mr. Collins was in the U.S. Marine Corps serving as a corpsman for the U.S. Navy in the Korean War.  For 20 years, he and his wife, Celice, traveled the globe.   His greatest skill was his charismatic ability to engage people.  Mr. Collins was preceded in death by his parents.  Survivors include his beloved partner of 21 years, Celice Feltus; three children, Jay, Craig and Laura Collins; one brother, Frank; and two sisters, Pat and Linda.

Phil was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi. He was a 1969 graduate of Central High School in Jackson, MS where he was a member of the ROTC. After graduation, Phil attended the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS. While at USM, Phil was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. After four years of ROTC at USM, Phil was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. He was assigned to the Army Officer Basic and Advanced Course for Armor at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

After his graduation from Armor School, he was assigned to the Mississippi National Guard where he held several military positions. His first assignment was a Tactical Officer with the Mississippi Military Academy, later becoming a Platoon Leader with C Company 1/155th Infantry in Brookhaven then to Detachment 1, C Company in Port Gibson. He was later assigned as Community Relations Officer with the 102nd Public Affairs Detachment in Jackson. Phil was assigned to the State Headquarters in 1984 as Contracting Administrator in the Facilities Management Office. Later, he was assigned as the Budget Officer which is the position he held until he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2014. Phil received numerous awards and decorations during his years of service in the Mississippi National Guard. 

Phil is preceded in death by parents Dr. Thomas Philip Cote, Jr. and Jeanette Fuente Cote of Jackson, MS; grandparents Andrew Ramon and Elizabeth Necaise Fuente of Gulfport, MS; Dr. Thomas Philip Cote, Sr. and Dorothy Logue Cote of Jackson, MS.

Survivors are siblings Elizabeth “Cissy” Arender (Gene) of Franklin, TN, Lisa McGinley (Dave) of Cabot, AR, Andy Cote (Tara) of Madison, MS, Tim Cote (Diane) of Spencer, OK, Henry Cote (Beth) of Jackson, MS. Phil is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and special friend Paula Looney.

Charles H. "Chuck" Davidson

Hattiesburg - Charles Hailey "Chuck" Davidson, 50, of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, passed away in Biloxi on May 3, 2018, from complications following a stroke. Chuck was born in Lafayette, Louisiana, on December 19, 1967, but spent most of his life in Hattiesburg. He graduated from Hattiesburg High School in 1986. Chuck was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity at the University of Southern Mississippi where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration in 1991.

Chuck was actively involved in the Boy Scouts and at age 14, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout with Troop 93 at Parkway Heights United Methodist Church. After earning the rank of Eagle Scout, he remained active in Scouting as a summer counselor at Camp Tiak. Chuck travelled widely during his lifetime, and it was Scouting that likely sparked his sense of adventure. Chuck was known for his love of gardening and his kind, outgoing personality. 

Survivors include his mother, Faye Davidson; his father, Dr. Charles Davidson; sisters Diane Speedling (Sandon) and Beverly Fulcher (Dave) two nephews, and a niece. 

The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff of Merit Health Biloxi Medical Center for the excellent care they provided to Chuck and to the family following his stroke.

Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Saturday, May 12 at Parkway Heights United Methodist Church, immediately followed by a memorial service.

DIED 1974 at age 23. He was an ENSIGN in the U.S. Navy. It appears that he died in the Vietnam War after being married for only @6 months.
